Key Organizers

Alice Derbyshire

Alice Derbyshire first heard about biodiesel in 2001, on an NPR science program about sustainable energy.  In 2002 and 2003, she completed the Iowa State University course in biodiesel business, production technology, and analytical methods.  Those same years, Alice teamed with her son to power a 1987 International school bus over 40,000 miles on the Van’s Warped Tour.

She is a founding partner of DFW  Biodiesl, Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas, and a charter member and former board secretary of the Biodiesel Coalition of Texas.  Alice is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and currently resides there with another form of sustainable energy – her 100 year old mother.

Camille Armantrout

Camille Armantrout of the Abundance Foundation couldn’t agree more with the Abundance’s mission of increasing public awareness of sustainable energy usage and local food consumption.  She brings fervor for local independence and a penchant for creating harmony to the project.  She and her multi-talented husband, Bob have lived and worked all over the world.  They were surprised to find such a solid sense of community right here in little Pittsboro and so came here to live.

Some of Camille’s many heroes are Vandana Shiva, Howard Zinn, Mahatma Gandhi, Kurt Vonnegut and Jane Goodall.  Both Bob and Camille are idealists who believe in romantic love and in giving peace a chance.  They once left the country just to avoid watching their tax money buy bombs for Iraq.
Camille has worked in kitchens, on construction sites, driven taxi and groomed race track thoroughbreds.  She bakes for fun, trains horses, and writes about the world as she sees it.

Don Scott

Serves as Director of Sustainability for the National Biodiesel Board. Don’s program areas build science and awareness to ensure that biodiesel production meets today’s needs for environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, and quality of life without compromising future generations’ ability to meet these needs for themselves.

Don is a licensed Professional Engineer with a civil engineering degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia.  Prior to joining the National Biodiesel Board, Don was an Environmental Engineer for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  His work there focused on protecting clean, plentiful drinking water. Don enjoys driving and working on diesel engines, and joined the NBB team to help the biodiesel industry grow as a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation fuels.

In 2008 he led a workgroup that developed the Baseline Practices for Sustainability of Biodiesel (BPS), the first document of its kind to address biodiesel sustainability issues in the United States. Under his leadership the BPS document has been developed into a web-based tool for self-evaluation and quantification of sustainability attributes.
